Swimming Pools and Hot Tubs

Poster on how to properly drain and backwash pools/hot tubs, detailing disposal options and district rules for sanitation.

Need to drain a swimming pool or hot tub?

Under District Resolution No. 123 (as amended), discharge of swimming pool and hot tub water—including filter backwash—is STRICTLY PROHIBITED without prior authorization from the General Manager.

When draining is necessary, the preferred alternative is to reuse the water for landscape irrigation whenever practical.

If reuse is not feasible, contact the District to obtain authorization to discharge to the sanitary sewer system.

District staff can assist you in locating a sanitary sewer cleanout on your property's sewer lateral. All authorized discharges must be made through an approved sanitary sewer cleanout. Discharge by any other method is prohibited.

To minimize the risk of sewer backups:

  • Use a drain hose no larger than 1 inch in diameter to limit the discharge rate.
  • Continuously monitor interior drains, especially basement showers, tubs, and floor drains.
  • If water begins backing up into the home, stop pumping immediately. A sewer blockage may be present, or the discharge rate may need to be reduced.

Property owners are responsible for ensuring that pool or hot tub water does not flow onto neighboring properties or enter adjacent structures.
