We are pleased to provide notice that work is scheduled to begin Monday, October 5, to rehabilitate the existing biofilter at Wasatch Resource Recovery (WRR). Foul air from two buildings at WRR is treated through this odor control system. Within the biofilter, microorganisms biologically break down odor-causing compounds into less- or non-odorous compounds. However, airflow through the biofilter has been impacted, preventing the system from operating as designed and likely contributing to some of the odor events experienced by our community.

To address the airflow issues and restore the biofilter to optimal performance, all components of the system will be removed and replaced. During this work, we anticipate that odor events may occur more frequently and may be more noticeable. Weather-permitting, the work is expected to be completed within approximately two weeks.

Our partner, Opal Fuels, is also preparing to begin construction of a replacement tank for a leaking tank that we believe is contributing to a number of the odor events experienced by our community. The anticipated cost of the District’s contribution to this project was presented to and approved by the District’s Board at its regular meeting on September 17.

We will provide additional information about the tank replacement project when that work begins. We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to address these odor issues and improve the performance of our odor control systems.
